      Big Swamp Wildlife Park

Big Swamp Wildlife Park coordinator Sheri Metternick-Jones finds a secluded spot in the free flight aviary to view a completed section of path. Volunteer and Friend of Big Swamp Wildlife Park John Kemp holds Jack, a 10 year old Little Corella, in a game they play called sandwich.

Pathways make a big step forwards.

The begining of March marked the, long awaited, commencement of the construction of a 700m, 2m wide pathway throughout Big Swamp Wildlife Park.

Completion of the path will allow for better access throughout the park for people with disabilities, the aged and families with children in prams. Not only will the path provide better access for all pedestrian traffic but will also produce a continuity throughout the park.

The project is being funded by a $100,000 State Government grant which was alocated for improvements to the park. Hopefully this will be the first of many proposed improvements to take place within the Park.

Friends despite the odds

John and Marie Kemp adopted Jack a couple of years ago, they donated new housing for him and take an active interest in his care. They visit him regularly and ensure he gets plenty of exercise and attention.

Jack isn't the friendliest of birds, although he sounds friendly enough when he talks to you. He has a reputation among the animal carers as a bird that will bite the hand that feeds him. But with John he generally behaves himself and they can often be seen going for a walk or performing tricks.

John is also a regular visitor at childrens birthday parties and other functions held at the park. He attends with his own birds Teddy, a Red-Tail Black Cockatoo, and Polly, a Sunconjure, and is a big hit with adults and children alike.

Never too young to lend a helping hand.

Although Big Swamp Wildlife Park has an age limit for volunteers, this young man arrived at feed time and decided he would help out anyway.
